British Combinatorial Conference 2019

From 29th July-2nd August Rosemary Bailey, Peter Cameron, and Siavash Lashkarighouchani attended the British Combinatorial Conference at the University of Birmingham. Peter organised a mini-symposium on Designs and Latin Squares, at which Rosemary spoke on ‘Substitutes for the non-existent square lattice design for 36 treatments’. Peter also contributed a talk on ‘Hall-Paige and synchronization’. At the conference business meeting, Peter was re-elected chair of the British Combinatorial Committee, a position he has held for 25 years.

LMS Undergraduate Summer School

Peter Cameron spent the week 22nd-26th July at the London Mathematical Society’s Undergraduate Summer School at the University of Leeds, where he gave two talks, one on ‘Problems around graphs, groups and semigroups’ and one on ‘The random graph’.

Research Day in the School of Mathematics and Statistics

CIRCA members took part in the Research Day, held in the School of Mathematics and Statistics on 24th January 2019. The speakers were Rosemary Bailey, Collin Bleak, Peter Cameron, Martyn Quick, Louis Theran, and Peter Cameron. Olexandr Konovalov and Michael Torpey presented a poster.

Topics on Groups and their Representations

Colva Roney-Dougal attended the conference “Topics on Groups and their Representations” at the Palazzo Feltrinelli, Gargnano sul Garda, Italy on October 9th – 11th, 2017. She gave an invited talk “Generation of finite groups, with applications to computing normalisers” (see abstract and slides).

Joint EMS-SCM meeting at ICMS

Martyn Quick attended the joint meeting of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques (27-29 September 2017) held at the ICMS in Edinburgh.  He was invited to speak at the special session on Geometric Group Theory at this meeting and delivered a talk titled “Presentations for Thompson’s group V and its generalisations”Colva Roney-Dougal and Colin Campbell also attended.

Permutation Groups in Marienheide

Peter Cameron spoke at a summer school for PhD students on Permutation Groups in Marienheide, Germany, run by the Experimental and Constructive Algebra Group at RWTH Aachen. He gave an introduction to permutation groups and applications to semigroups, and also ran the problem session (which was held outdoors, as the weather was warm).

Visits and conferences – May 2017

  • The London Combinatorics Colloquia took place at Queen Mary University of London on 10th May, when Sophie Huczynska gave a talk “Graph classes under homomorphic image order”, and the following day at the London School of Economics. Whilst there Peter Cameron chaired a meeting of the British Combinatorial Committee, also attended by Nik Ruskuc.
  • Nik Ruskuc visited Robert Brignall at the Open University for a week to pursue their joint research project about the property of well quasi order in combinatorics.
  • Colin Campbell, Edmund Robertson and Nayab Khalid attended the 40th Groups in Galway meeting at NUI Galway from 18-20th May.
